Parambikulam Tiger Reserve: A Wildlife Trekking Journey Worth Taking | Kerala

Planning a forest adventure from Kochi? Discover the beautiful journey to Parambikulam, the Pug Mark trekking experience, wildlife encounters, and a few important things to know before you go.

Is Parambikulam Worth Visiting?

If you love forests, wildlife, long walks, and meaningful travel experiences, Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is a destination worth considering.

Located in Kerala’s Palakkad district, Parambikulam offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the wilderness of the Western Ghats. From lush green landscapes and forest trails to the possibility of spotting elephants, deer, monkeys, and a variety of birds, the experience is about much more than reaching a destination.

We recently explored Parambikulam through the Pug Mark Trails programme, and it turned out to be one of those journeys that stays with you long after you return home.

Here is what made the journey special, along with some practical insights for anyone planning a visit.

1. How to Reach Parambikulam from Kochi

One of the most important things to know before planning this trip is the route.

There is no direct road connecting Parambikulam with the rest of Kerala. The official access route passes through Tamil Nadu, via Topslip in Anamalai Tiger Reserve.

Our journey from Kochi followed the route towards Pollachi, then Anamalai and Parambikulam.

Route: Kochi → Pollachi → Anamalai / Topslip → Parambikulam

This is an important detail for travellers coming from Kerala. Plan your travel time carefully, and check the current entry procedures, vehicle requirements, and timings before departure.

2. The Journey Is Part of the Adventure

For me, the journey itself was one of the best parts of visiting Parambikulam.

Leaving the familiar surroundings behind and gradually moving towards the forest creates a different kind of excitement. The changing landscape, greenery, winding roads, and the feeling of getting closer to nature make the drive memorable.

And once you enter the forest landscape, the journey becomes an experience of its own.

You begin to notice the life around you. Sometimes, wildlife appears unexpectedly along the way, turning an ordinary stretch of road into a moment worth remembering.

3. Wildlife Encounters: What Can You See?

parambikulam03

Parambikulam is known for its rich biodiversity and is home to an impressive variety of wildlife.

During our journey, we were fortunate to experience some memorable wildlife encounters, including elephants and the Indian gaur, locally known as kaati.

Seeing these animals in their natural habitat was one of the most exciting moments of the trip.

Wildlife enthusiasts may also encounter:

  • Peacocks: A beautiful sight along forest landscapes.
  • Deer: We spotted deer during the journey.
  • Wild boars: Another fascinating inhabitant of the forest.
  • Monkeys: Often seen around forest roads and visitor areas.
  • Lion-tailed macaques: A remarkable Western Ghats primate, although sightings are never guaranteed.
  • Elephants and Indian gaur: Powerful animals that make a lasting impression when seen in the wild.

The elephants we encountered were massive. Watching them move through their natural surroundings gave us a real appreciation of their strength and presence.

Parambikulam is also tiger habitat. However, a tiger sighting is never something visitors should expect or plan around. The forest is their home, and seeing one is a matter of chance.

For me, the real joy was appreciating every encounter, not waiting for a particular animal.

4. Pug Mark Trails: Our Trekking Experience

We booked the Pug Mark Trails programme for our forest adventure.

Our trekking experience lasted approximately 10–12 hours. This was a substantial day of exploring the forest, and it gave us an opportunity to experience nature at a slower pace.

The guides were very friendly, which made the experience even more enjoyable.

Walking through the forest is different from simply travelling through it. You notice the smaller details: the sounds of birds, the textures of leaves, the light filtering through the canopy, and the occasional movement somewhere along the trail.

A forest trek also teaches patience. You cannot decide when an animal will appear or what the next turn will reveal.

For those who enjoy nature, photography, and outdoor experiences, this kind of journey can be deeply rewarding.

A note for visitors: Our 10–12-hour experience describes our trip, not a guaranteed duration for every booking. Trek difficulty, distance, duration, age restrictions, inclusions, and availability should be confirmed directly with the reserve before booking.

5. Important Things to Know Before Your Visit

A wildlife trip requires a little more preparation than a regular sightseeing trip.

Be careful with food around monkeys

One important lesson from our experience is to be cautious when carrying food.

Monkeys may approach visitors or snatch exposed food, especially when they associate people with food. This can be frightening, particularly for children, and an animal may react defensively.

For families travelling with kids, this is worth taking seriously.

  • Avoid eating or displaying food around monkeys.
  • Keep snacks securely stored and follow your guide’s instructions.
  • Never feed, tease, or approach wildlife.
  • Do not try to retrieve food from an animal.
  • If an animal approaches, stay calm and follow your guide’s directions.

Also, confirm the reserve’s rules regarding packed food and what you are permitted to carry during your trek. Follow the instructions of the forest staff.

Prepare for a long trekking day

If you are booking a long-duration trek:

  • Wear comfortable trekking shoes.
  • Carry drinking water as permitted by the programme.
  • Follow the guide’s instructions throughout the trek.
  • Carry necessary personal medication and weather protection, subject to programme rules.
  • Consider your fitness and the needs of children or older family members before choosing a trail.

A long forest trek may not suit everyone, so check the difficulty level and requirements in advance.

6. A Cinematic Journey Through Parambikulam

Some journeys deserve more than photographs.

During this trip, I also created a cinematic film capturing the atmosphere of Parambikulam, the forest landscapes, the journey, and the moments that made the experience memorable.

ASAIV : Deep Inside Parambikulam

For me, the film is not just a travel memory. It is an attempt to capture the feeling of being surrounded by the forest, experiencing its beauty, and sharing a little of that experience with others.

Is Parambikulam Worth the Journey?

Absolutely, in my experience.

Parambikulam is worth visiting if you enjoy nature, wildlife, trekking, and journeys that take you away from the usual pace of life.

The drive, the greenery, the friendly guides, the long trekking experience, and especially our fortunate sightings of elephants and Indian gaur made this trip truly special.

But perhaps the most valuable part of the journey was the reminder that wildlife experiences are not about collecting sightings. They are about respecting a living forest and appreciating the moments it allows us to witness.

If you are planning a wildlife adventure from Kochi, put Parambikulam on your list.

Travel slowly. Observe patiently. Let the forest tell its story.
