Malarikkal Pink Water Lily Fields in Kottayam, Kerala, are a magical sight that transforms every monsoon. From July to September, these serene paddy fields turn into a breathtaking pink paradise, drawing travelers, photographers, and nature lovers from all over.
The Journey to Malarikkal
We began our trip from Alappuzha, taking the scenic Changanassery route. Even though heavy rain poured down that morning, the drive felt refreshing and peaceful. The lush monsoon greenery of Kerala made the journey even more enchanting.
Located just 23 km from Changanassery, Malarikkal lies in the welcoming village of Thiruvarppu. The warmth and friendliness of the locals made the trip even more memorable.
Arrive Before 9 AM for the Best View
If you want to see the Malarikkal Pink Water Lily Fields in full bloom, it’s essential to arrive before 9 AM. This is when the lilies open up beautifully, covering the water in shades of pink. By midday, the flowers begin to close, so early mornings are the best time to experience their charm.
A Cinematic Photographer’s Dream
During peak bloom, Malarikkal becomes a natural canvas of pink blossoms reflecting in the still waters. Against the backdrop of coconut trees and cloudy skies, the scenery feels surreal.
I captured cinematic shots using my smartphone with a gimbal and detailed stills on my DSLR. The colors, textures, and light during monsoon mornings here are perfect for both photography and filmmaking.
The Peaceful Boat Ride
A must-do activity in Malarikkal is the boat ride through the pink waters, costing only ₹100 per adult. The hour-long ride takes you deep into the lily fields, where the flowers sway gently with the ripples.
My children were thrilled by the ride, their laughter adding extra joy to an already magical morning.
